With almost 12 years growing mushrooms commercially under our belt, we’ve learned a thing or two about growing mushrooms and running a farm.
$150 for the first hour (pro-rated for shorter durations) and $100/hr thereafter. We strive to make it very worth your while. If our eager 2014 selves consulted with our current selves, we’d have saved time, effort and lost profit worth 100x the investment in consultation fee. There are many great farmers out there - we do many things differently and it’s worked great for us, giving us more consistent, reliable harvests which is a MUST to operate a fresh mushroom business.
Some quick background on how we do things. We grow 11+ varieties in 2 growrooms: King Trumpet, Chestnut, Pioppino, Enoki, Lions Mane, Coral Tooth, Blue Oyster, Black Pearl Oyster, Pink Oyster, Shiitake, Maitake and Reishi. As of 2026, we average 1200lb/wk (800 during late summer and 1500 many weeks during the cooler season. We do all this with around 200hrs/wk of labor for owners and employees- including all biz admin etc,
We run a CSA, sell to restaurants, retail, farmers market. We make our own blocks. We finetune “masters mix” to meet the specific needs of each species. We have experience growing from homemade sawdust based substrate and plan to increase that this year.
We grow seasonally, we each work five days a week, we use wheely shelves, we use both high-pressure-misting system and hydrofoggers (and we have experience with Aquafo). We don’t ignore blocks when they’re incubating, we embrace loose razor blades and hand-misters. We managed customers and inventory without software and are developing our own software for packin and inventory and order management. We run our own website and instagram.
There are other farms out there doing great work that offer exceptional consultation. It’s always advisable to get more than one opinion. But, word of caution: if you want valuable information about running a mushroom farm, make sure that whomever you are consulting with is an actual experienced and successful farmer, not just someone who sells mushroom gear or pumps out content.
